How Digital ICE Restores Your Memories

When I digitise your cherished slides and film transparencies using industry-leading Nikon Coolscan 5000 and Epson Perfection V850 Pro scanners, they utilise a powerful built-in technology called Digital ICE (Image Correction and Enhancement). Over the decades, film naturally accumulates microscopic dust, fine scratches, and fingerprints. Instead of manually editing these imperfections later Digital ICE uses an automated hardware-based solution during the actual scanning process to ensure your digital files look as pristine as possible.

The Science Behind the Magic

The technology works by employing a specialized infrared (IR) light source alongside the standard RGB (Red, Green, Blue) sensors. While visible light captures the colours and details of an image, the infrared light passes straight through the film emulsion but bounces off physical surface defects like dust and scratches. This creates a separate "defect map" of the slide. The advanced scanning software then analyses this map and uses smart interpolation to mathematically fill in the damaged gaps with the exact surrounding colours, seamlessly erasing imperfections without altering the original image detail.

An Important Exception for Black and White Film

While Digital ICE works wonders on colour slides and colour negatives, it is important to note that it cannot be used on traditional black and white film. Silver halide crystals, which form the image in traditional monochrome film, are completely opaque to infrared light. Because the scanner cannot differentiate between the actual image details and physical dust particles, running Digital ICE on black and white film results in severe image distortion. Rest assured, for your classic monochrome collections, as much is done as possible to minimise dust, complete some digital clean-up in PhotoShop to produce the best possible digital transfers.
